COP23 Delegation

It Takes Roots to Grow the Solutions

COP23 Bonn, Germany Nov 4 – 17, 2017

The Indigenous Environmental Network, Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, and the Climate Justice Alliance  have joined forces again for a powerful delegation of more than 20 frontline leaders from North American climate justice movements to the23rd Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP23) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany.

What’s at stake in COP23?

Trump may not be here for COP23, but the frontline movements are.

This years delegation to Bonn, Germany brings together organizers from some of the largest grassroots movements of the recent years: From Jackson Rising: the Struggle for Economic Democracy and Black Self-Determination, to the Indigenous movement to keep fossil fuels in the ground, from the Canadian Tar Sands to the pipeline battles of NoDAPL and KXL, and to the frontlines of the Just Recovery for Puerto Rico, Houston, and the Gulf South. We represent the communities who are being impacted first and worst by Climate Change.

At COP23 the parties are tasked with implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.  The It Takes Roots Delegation is on the ground in Bonn to push for climate action plans with greater ambitions, accountability, and real emission cuts at the source where they are being produced: coal mines, oil refineries, tar sands, fracking, waste incinerators, and aviation.

As one of the leading producers of greenhouse gasses in the world, the US has a responsibility to fulfill its obligation https://fayajra.ae/.  We must reduce emissions as soon as possible—especially emissions from burning fossil fuels.

Our 5 Core Goals at COP23

  1. Build on our analysis of the weakness of the Paris Agreement and push for increased ambitions
  2. Lift up the voices from Puerto Rico and the Gulf South and leverage global solidarity with the demands for a Just Recovery.
  3. Engage the Mayors and Governors to move them toward strategies of Just Transition
  4. Support the Traditional Knowledge Platform as a mechanism to defend Human Rights and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  5. Deepen relationships with our global movement allies
